Kandalama - Sigiriya – Colombo
The fortress of the mad king Kashyapa (5th century) perched 200 metres high on a block of red granite, the Lion Rock. It is best to leave early to avoid the crowds. The water features of the site are highly sophisticated and the Maidens (royal concubines or apsaras, celestial nymphs) painted on the stone walls are exceptional: for their beauty and because they are the only known female images of the period in Sri Lanka. You then take the road to Colombo where we suggest you dine at the Gallery Café, a prominent address in Colombo, installed in the former offices of Geoffrey Bawa.
If Sri Lanka is first known for its "rice and curry", lime, mango, pomegranate and avocado, passion fruit grow here as elsewhere. All of which makes for a fresh, colourful and tasty dish. This is the case in this restaurant, installed in the former offices of Geoffrey Bawa. Red bricks, designer furniture, colourful canvases and contemporary ceramics offer a privileged setting to a chic clientele, essentially Sri Lankan. Dinner and overnight stay is here in Colombo.
